Garagespace

Garagespace

Garagespace is our satellite venue situated just off Edinburgh’s George Square in George Square Lane, near the University of Edinburgh Library and the Meadows. A garage door offers a unique opportunity for a mural – placed alongside the existing graffiti in the area. Our mural changes during the year and is launched with free events and displays in the space, all curated by the BHLM Artistic Instigator Alan Grieve.

You can view the current mural at any time at the garage at 6 George Square Lane, Edinburgh EH8 9LJ

Opening in August

Off the Charts

Launching this year as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival, Blackie House Graduate Awards will be presented to one final-year student from each of the four of Scotland’s principal art schools – Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow – in recognition of the student’s dedication to developing a unique and robust art practice.

Each artist will receive a prize of £2,500 to support a new piece/body of site-specific work made in response to items in the Blackie House collection, and exhibited at BHLM’s satellite venue, Garagespace. The resulting work will be presented as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival in 2026.

In this group exhibition for the 2026 Award, the four emerging artists will respond to a selection of maps, globes and books held in the Blackie House Library and Museum, which chart Scotland’s land and seascapes: its hills, mountains and valleys, its lochs, rivers and canals, its paths and roads, its windmills and oil rigs, coastline and islands. In the age of GPS, the new commissions consider what positions creative minds occupy in and around these natural and man-made features, finding their points of orientation across various media. Told individually and collectively, their stories will take shape in the Blackie House’s unique satellite space: a 250-year-old garage.

Our 2025 mural was launched at our Summer Listening Party during the Edinburgh Art Festival in August 2025.

SUN GOD FRAUD SQUAD
Summer Listening Party

Part of the RING OF TRUTH exhibition in partnership with EAF25, a free one-off event at Garagespace by the Meadows. This pop-up party celebrated the launch of the vinyl album, SUN GOD FRAUD SQUAD, which accompanied the main exhibition. This was a unique opportunity to meet the artists, musicians and writers involved with this project where the new album was played alongside works by visual artists Eddie Summerton and Alan Grieve, with a DJ set by Volens Chorus to conclude the gathering.

Our third mural in summer 2024 celebrated Robert Burn’s poem ‘Song, composed in August’. Our event combined music, song and birdsong.

Our mural in 2023 coincided with our Reveal project with the Royal Scottish Academy. An exhibition featuring three artists, Rowan Dahl, Alan Grieve and Derrick Guild, creating works in response to two of the most important illustrated books ever printed: Albrecht Dürer’s The Apocalypse (1498) and Francisco de Goya’s Los Caprichos (1799). We ran yoga-related drawing classes in the garage space and also at the RSA, playfully inverting Goya’s name to Yoga.

Our first mural in 2022.

All Garagespace events are free and open to all.
